How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything - The Profile Version
We've all heard a version of "how you do anything is how you do everything," and then turned that into running around making our beds every day, hustling through exercise, trying to be perfectionists. But, as I re-examined what that might really mean it occurred to me that it also plays out through the lens of your particular design: the way things come to you, the way you think about things, and the goals you want are based on you as an individual.
More specifically I looked at it through profile.
The 1st Line
If you're a 1st line, you might like to do a lot of investigating for anything you do. If you're making decisions in your life, deciding how to be successful in your career or with your relationships or health, that could include reading books, taking classes, doing whatever it is to investigate the nature of what you want, and making a decision about that. Doing an investigation and becoming an authority on what you are seeking the answers to is how the 1st line works. Embrace and enjoy your investigations.
The 2nd Line
If you're a 2nd line, "how you do anything is how you do everything" is not a punishment. You are not designed to stress yourself out. You have inherited your ease and natural knowing from the 1st line. Things should be easy for you. If something is keeping you up at night, if it's a skill you can't learn, if something is hard to the point where you have to try and try and try again, it's possible that thing isn't for you. This doesn't mean not learning or giving up at the first sign of friction either, but leaving space for gentle exploration and playfulness with a focus on what you know intuitively or what comes naturally should take the lead for you.
The 3rd Line
If you're a 3rd line, you'll likely trial and error situations and circumstances to gather experience. Just know that you're meant to experiment, and healthy experiments include failing. Having a hypothesis that didn't work out and provided information and knowledge is being a successful third line. There may be a little egg on your face, but hopefully you don't take it too much to heart. Learn to look at it and joke, "and that went well," and move on to the next thing, because the failure is teaching you how to succeed. And once you've succeeded at a thing and completely understand it, you know how to tell other people how to do it. You're the person saying, "I tried all 20 of those blenders. This one is best for smoothies. This one is best for cake ingredients. This one is best when you're fixing cocktails. These five are shit. Don't ever buy them." It's not the investigative nature of the 1st line. They gather information and then decide. You test the information that has been uncovered in the research.
The 4th Line
If you're a 4th line, things are going to come to you from familiar places. People mistakenly think fourth lines need to run out and build a network. Your network is who you get coffee with, who's on your email list, the person who delivers your dry cleaning, the person making your coffee. These people are as likely to know about an opportunity for you or information that will ease your path as anyone you meet through more formal networking sessions. It's about letting your intimate and familiar places and spaces, the things that are fun for you, the things you encounter in the course of the day give you what you need to build the life you want. No organizations, networks or social media required.
The 5th Line
If you're a fifth line, people look at you and project that you have the answers. And you likely do. Yours is to be discerning about who you're discovering these answers for. Is this important to you? Is it information you're interested in sharing? You're meant to look around at your life and study the things that fascinate you, to be clear about your answers, what you're interested in, and what you want in your life. Then you can be clear about what of that you want to share with other people and let them know what they can expect from you.
The 6th Line
The sixth line is the alien profile. One foot out the door and into another world having already mastered this one, though there can be stress when you can't translate how a thing should be done with how it is showing up in the world. Your job is to go easy on yourself. Sixth lines can have a perfectionist nature, because you know so much. Embrace the way you love to do things, the way that works for you. This is an amalgamation of the lessons from all the other lines. You're already occupied with what comes next, so if the current way you do things ain't broke, don't fix it.
That is how you do things. That is how you begin everything in your life. It's personal.
