The Five Human Design Types, Mechanically

What is type in Human Design?

You have learned your type and you are excited to jump in. You thought that you were a Generator and you have set about jumping into immediate response to all that catches your fancy but you still feel confused, drained and are not getting the results and satisfaction the way you had envisioned. What gives?

Your Human Design type describes how your aura meets other people and how your energy is built to move into the world. It isn't a personality and it isn't a guess. Type is calculated exactly from your birth date, time and place. Those calculations show which energy centers in your chart are defined, how they connect, and how they regulate your energy across the whole system.

There are four aura types: Generator (including the Manifesting Generator subtype), Projector, Manifestor and Reflector.

Most introductions stop there and hand you a slogan for yours. Inform and Initiate, Wait To Respond, Wait For the Invitation, Wait a Lunar Cycle. Unfortunately, this is the lowest common denominator for how type functions and there are a myriad mitigating factors that are specific to the mechanics of your design that complicate these oft repeated slogans. 

A slogan is a flat label, and you aren't flat. Two Generators may feel nothing alike, because type is the first layer of a chart, not the whole of it. So this is what type actually is, where it comes from, and why it never answers the question on its own.

How type is calculated

Type comes down to two questions: is your Sacral center defined, and is a motor connected to your Throat? The four motors include the Sacral, the Root, the Solar Plexus (Emotional center) and the Heart (Ego or Will center). "Connected" means an unbroken run of defined channels from the motor to the Throat, directly or through other defined centers.

That's why type is exact. It isn't a matter of interpretation, only of which lines in the chart are colored in. It's also why the Generator and Manifesting Generator question has a clean answer: it turns on that one connection to the Throat.

The four types (and one subtype)

Each type has a strategy (how it's built to engage), a signature (the feeling that tells you you're on track) and a not-self theme (the feeling that tells you you're not).

Generator

A defined Sacral is a renewable source of life-force energy, and it works by response. The energy is there, but something outside you has to switch it on: a question, an opportunity, a thing in front of you. When you respond to what's actually in front of you, the energy keeps coming. When you start things because you think you should, it runs into frustration.

Manifesting Generator (subtype)

Some will insist that Manifesting Generator is a separate type, but this is not how this was initially understood from the founder of Human Design. The MG is a subtype of the generator because the aura type and therefore the strategy is the same as a Generator. The same defined Sacral, with one difference: a motor reaches the Throat, so energy can go straight into action and speech. That's why Manifesting Generators move fast, run several things at once and skip steps that turn out not to matter. The strategy is still to respond. Many teachers add "inform" because the speed lands on other people the way a Manifestor's does.

Projector

No defined Sacral and no motor to the Throat. A Projector's aura is focused, and it reads other people and systems with real depth. The energy isn't built to work the way a Generator's does, so the strategy is to wait to be recognized and invited into the big things: work, relationships, where to live. An invitation is what lets that insight be received instead of resisted. This does not mean that you sit around and wait to live your life. It means that as you find the systems that support your life and the hobbies that actually work for you, recognition follows, and you get invited to share what you see. Projectors are systems handlers: you read how a thing is put together, and the invitation is what lets that be received.

Manifestor

A motor connected to the Throat with no defined Sacral. Manifestors can start things from nothing, without waiting for anything outside them. The energy comes in bursts rather than as a steady supply. Manifestors are designed to work in cycles that alternate between bursts of energy and rest cycles. The aura is closed, so action without warning makes people feel uncertain or take them by surprise. Informing can help clear resistance before you act, but there are nuances to informing if that is a tool you reach for, and the technique will vary by the wiring of the Manifestor.

Reflector

No defined centers at all. A Reflector takes in and reflects the people and places around them, which makes environment matter more for this type than any other. The environments that you curate for yourself are paramount to how you experience life and a byproduct is the valuable information you can reflect back to others based on your readings of environment and energy. The Moon moves through all 64 gates in roughly 28 days, so a Reflector meets the full range of themselves across that cycle. That's why big decisions wait a full lunar month.

Why your type isn't the entire answer

Your type tells you how your aura meets the world. Your authority tells you how to decide inside it. If your type description doesn't match your experience, the gap is almost always in the layers underneath.

A Generator with a defined Solar Plexus has emotional authority, and emotional authority outranks the Sacral. The gut response is real, but it isn't final. Clarity arrives once the emotional wave has moved through, not in the moment.

A Projector's strategy is to wait for the invitation. Whether to accept that invitation is decided by their authority, not by the invitation itself.

Channels change the picture too. A Generator with the 3-60 channel is wired for pulse energy: on, then off. "Show up consistently" was never a description of them.

That's the pattern behind some common "this doesn't fit me" moments. Type is the starting point. Authority, definition, open centers and environment change how you experience your energy and the more accurate version of your particular strategy.

How many of you are there?

You're probably wondering how rare your type is. Generators are about 37% of people, Manifesting Generators about 33%, Projectors about 20%, Manifestors about 9%, and Reflectors about 1%. Population figures are approximate and vary slightly by source.

If you go looking, you'll find the numbers disagree, and that disagreement isn't a mistake on your part. Third-party sites put Manifesting Generators anywhere from 32% to 35%, and Jovian Archive's own pages give Projectors as "around 20%" in one place and "just over 20%" in another. That's because the figures come from databases of charts people looked up for themselves, not from a census.

But the percentage only counts the label. It tells you how common your type is, not how common you are. A Generator with your channels, your definition, and your authority is wired like no other Generator, so there is really only one of you. Your type is calculated exactly from your birth data; the percentage is an estimate about everyone who happens to share the label. The variance between sources is small. The variance inside the category is the whole point, because every chart under that label runs differently.
