What Is Authority in Human Design? How Your Chart Decides
You need more time, and everyone is waiting on you. What if that isn't a flaw? Authority is how your chart is built to decide, and it follows a fixed order.
After working all night on your proposal, you finish in the wee hours of the morning and feel a wave of nervousness rising in your solar plexus, a clear signal from your body that something here isn't quite right yet, even if you can't explain what it is.
You know that you need more time to assess what's missing and if the path towards this deal is really the right move to make, but in your mind's eye you can see the frustrated faces of your family and business partners. Again, you're the one holding everyone up because it just doesn't feel comfortable to make the move that they are all anticipating.
But what if the need for time isn't a flaw you're supposed to fix? Most decision-making advice assumes everyone is built to decide the same way, and in Human Design, that simply isn't how it works. How you are designed to make a decision is written into your chart, and it has a name: your authority.
What is authority in Human Design?
Authority is the personalized mechanism by which your body takes the lead in identifying a clear decision and the process it takes for that clarity to arrive. It isn't a preference or a personality style. As with the rest of your chart, authority is calculated exactly from your birth date, time and place, by looking at which energy centers in your chart are defined.
Authority is the part of the chart that feels most uncomfortable to dive into. It can be one of the places where conditioning is felt most acutely because we have essentially been brainwashed into making decisions in ways that don't match our natural inclinations. We may never have been allowed to make them our own way at all. We've been pushed into snap judgements when that feels uncomfortable, or into sleeping on things when we already want to act on what we know.
So many people follow their type's strategy faithfully and still make decisions that don't hold because strategy only tells you how to meet the world: to respond, to wait for the invitation, to inform, to wait a lunar cycle, but it is authority that tells you how to know whether the decision in front of you is the correct path forward. Authority holds the key to determining the path you follow.
Remember, "Trust your gut" is only good advice if your gut is where your authority lives. But for many people, it isn't.
How your authority is determined
Authority follows a fixed order. As you go through the list below, stop at the first condition your chart meets. That is your authority. That holds even if centers lower on the list are also defined in your chart.
Order | If your chart has | Your authority is | Possible for |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | A defined Solar Plexus | Emotional | Generators, Manifesting Generators, Manifestors, Projectors |
2 | A defined Sacral, and an undefined Solar Plexus | Sacral | Generators and Manifesting Generators |
3 | A defined Spleen, with Solar Plexus and Sacral undefined | Splenic | Manifestors and Projectors |
4 | A defined Heart connected to the Throat, with none of the previous centers defined | Ego Manifested | Manifestors |
4 | A defined Heart connected to the G Center, with none of the previous centers defined | Ego Projected | Projectors |
5 | A defined G Center connected to the Throat, with none of the previous centers defined | Self-Projected | Projectors |
6 | Definition only in the Head, Ajna and Throat | Mental, also called Environmental or Outer | Projectors |
7 | No defined centers | Lunar | Reflectors |
This is why a Generator with a defined Solar Plexus isn't meant to answer from the Sacral in the moment, even though "wait to respond" is the first thing every Generator gets told. The Solar Plexus sits above the Sacral in the order, so the gut response is real information, but it isn't the final word until the emotional wave has had its time and issues the final verdict.
The seven authorities
Emotional authority
The Solar Plexus moves in a wave, up into hope and possibility and down into doubt and concern. There is no truth in the now for an emotional authority, because whatever you feel in a given moment is only one point in a myriad of emotions coloring your point of view. Clarity comes from feeling a decision across the emotional gamut of the whole wave, the high and the low, until what remains true no longer changes with your mood. That isn't the same as 100% certainty, which an emotional authority rarely gets. It's the clarity and settled sense that you can handle whatever arises as a result of the decision.
Contrary to opinions rampant on the internet, there is no fixed number of hours for this. The wave moves differently depending on the channels that define your Solar Plexus and the situation requiring a response, so one person may find clarity overnight on a small decision and another may need weeks for a large one. The work is learning the timing of your own wave rather than borrowing a rule from someone else. As with most things, comparison is the thief of joy.
Sacral authority
The Sacral answers in the present moment with a body response. It's a mechanical response, energy rising to meet something or simply not being available for it. It shows up as sound and felt bodily ("gut") sensation before it shows up as thought: the "uh-huh" and "unh-unh" that come out before your mind has weighed anything. Because the Sacral responds, it works best with something to respond to, which is why yes-or-no questions from people you trust can make it audible.
Splenic authority
The Spleen speaks once, quietly, in the moment, and it doesn't repeat itself. It is a survival intelligence, built around what is safe, healthy and well-timed for your body right now, and it usually arrives as a subtle knowing that comes before any reasoning. The difficulty is that it is easy to override. The mind starts arguing a second later, and by then the Spleen has already said what it had to say.
Ego Manifested authority
When the Heart is connected to the Throat, the will speaks directly, and the decision is heard in what you say in the moment, particularly about what you want and what's in it for you. It can sound blunt, but it isn't selfish. The Heart is the center of willpower and material commitment, and for this authority, a decision that doesn't come from genuine want won't be sustained.
Ego Projected authority
When the Heart is connected to the G Center, the question is whether you can identify with what is being offered: whether you want it, and whether it fits who you are and where you are going. Like Ego Manifested authority, it becomes clear by speaking, but it speaks through identity rather than straight from the will, so it helps to say what you want out loud to someone who is invited to listen.
Self-Projected authority
When the G Center is connected to the Throat and nothing above it on the list is defined, the truth is in your own voice. You need to talk a decision through, not for advice but to hear what comes out of your mouth, because the direction you are meant to take is revealed in your words rather than worked out in your head. The people you talk to are a sounding board. It's important to share things with people who can listen to you without judging or offering strong opinions so that you can hear the answer in the quality of your voice.
Mental authority
When the only definition is in the Head, Ajna and Throat, there is no inner authority in the body to consult, so clarity comes from outside: from talking a decision through with trusted people, and from noticing how it feels to be in the environment the decision would put you in. The mind is good at gathering perspective for this authority, but it isn't meant to make the call alone, and the right environment does a great deal of the work.
Lunar authority
With no defined centers, a Reflector's consistency comes from the Moon moving through all 64 gates in about 28 days. Taking a full lunar cycle on a significant decision lets a Reflector experience it from every angle the cycle offers, and talking it through with different people along the way lets them hear how their view shifts over time. The environment they are in shapes everything they sample, so where they spend that cycle matters as much as how long it is.
How common is your authority?
About half of people have emotional authority, about a third have Sacral authority, and roughly one in ten have Splenic authority. The other four, Ego Manifested, Ego Projected, Self-Projected and Mental, together with Lunar, make up the remaining few percent. Population figures are approximate and vary slightly by source.
One figure worth watching for: you will sometimes see Sacral authority given as 37%, which is the share of Generators, not the share of Sacral authority. Every Generator and Manifesting Generator with a defined Solar Plexus has emotional authority instead, so the Sacral group is smaller than the Generator group. As with type, your authority is calculated exactly. Only the percentages are estimates.
Deciding like yourself in a room that decides differently
The hardest part of authority is rarely understanding it. It's using it in a room full of people whose authority works differently from yours. A colleague with Splenic authority may never understand why you need a day to decide something they knew in a second, and someone with Sacral authority may not see why you have to talk through a choice that feels obvious to their body. Neither of them is wrong, and neither are you.
Your authority doesn't ask you to be faster or slower than anyone else. It asks you to stop making decisions through someone else's process. When you work with it, the decisions don't become perfect, but they become decisions you can stand behind, because they were made the way your body is built to make them.
If you've been following your type's strategy and still feel like your choices don't hold, start here. Look at the order above, find the first condition your chart meets, and pay attention to how decisions actually arrive for you over the next few weeks.
